IU Press to host University Press Week outreach events

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A panel discussion aimed at helping authors publish their first books will highlight educational outreach activities sponsored by Indiana University Press in celebration of University Press Week, which takes place Nov. 10 to 16.

“Publish Your First Book: Ask the Experts” will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Nov. 14 in Room E174 of the Herman B Wells Library at IU Bloomington. The discussion will offer the views of university press professionals and authors, including an overview of the publishing process and tips for writing a book proposal, choosing the right publisher and publicizing one's book. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Panelists will include Dee Mortensen, senior sponsoring editor at IU Press; Dave Hulsey, sales and marketing director at IU Press; James H. Madison, the Thomas and Kathryn Miller professor emeritus of history; and Greg Waller, professor of film and media studies and former chair of the Department of Communication and Culture. Carolyn Walters, executive director of IU's Office of Scholarly Publishing, will moderate.

The event and is free and open to the public with light refreshments provided. Deadline for registration, which is available online, is Nov. 7.

To supplement the panel discussion, staff members from IU Press will be available by appointment from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 13 and 15 at the Wells Library to answer individual questions about book publishing and promotion. To schedule a time slot, email iupnews@indiana.edu with your availability and the topic or topics you would like to discuss. Consultations are open to anyone on campus with an interest in academic publishing.

Additionally, in the spirit of partnership that pervades the university press community, Indiana University Press and 36 others will unite for the Association of American University Presses annual blog tour, which runs throughout the week, stopping at the IU Press blog on Nov. 15. Individual presses will blog on a different theme each day. Posts will include profiles of university press staff, the future of scholarly communication, subject area spotlights, the importance of regional publishing and the global reach of university presses. IU Press will highlight its "Framing the Global" project, funding by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and its Universities and Their Presses Program.
