Ballet Hispanico making its IU Bloomington debut with residency, performance

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Ballet Hispanico, celebrating 42 years of dance and culture, will make its Bloomington debut at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at IU Auditorium.

Led by artistic director Eduardo Vilaro, Ballet Hispanico fuses Latin dance with classical and contemporary techniques to create a style of modern dance propelled by theatricality and passion. Described by The Denver Post as "a staple of the American cultural scene," the company has a repertoire of more than 100 works by famous and emerging modern choreographers and has commissioned more than 75 new works from around the world.

While in Bloomington, members of Ballet Hispanico will hold a series of residency activities to engage groups such as La Casa, IU Residential Programs and Services, and IU Contemporary Dance. These include professional panel discussions, pre-show lectures and masterclasses.

"Ballet Hispanico is not only one of the foremost dance ensemble in the nation, it is leading the way for bringing the beauty and sophistication of Latin culture to the United States and beyond," IU Auditorium director Doug Booher said. "We are thrilled they are not only sharing their performance with us but sharing their time, energy and talents to engage with students at La Casa, IU's Latino Cultural Center and the Bloomington community. It is an honor to host them during their stay."

Founded in 1970 by National Medal of the Arts winner Tina Ramirez, Ballet Hispanico has grown from its grassroots origins as a dance school and community-based performing arts troupe to a world-class institution. Ballet Hispanico’s mission unfolds through the work of its professional company, a school of dance, and education  and outreach programs, all of which come together to celebrate the aesthetics of the Hispanic diaspora, build new avenues of cultural dialogue and share the joy of dance with all communities.

Ballet Hispanico has performed for more than 3 million people worldwide and has appeared in venues such as The John F. Kennedy Center, the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, UCLA's Royce Hall, Wolf Trap, Jacob's Pillow and The Joyce Theater, as well as national television appearances.

The performance on the Bloomington campus is being presented in part by a grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts and as a part of IU Themester 2013: Connectedness: Networks in a Complex World.
