Indiana Geological Survey's IndianaMap named Notable Government Document
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- IndianaMap, an interactive, Web-based publication hosted by the Indiana Geological Survey that provides detailed geographic information system data about the state, has been named a Notable Government Document for 2012 by the American Library Association.
IndianaMap brings together multiple layers of detailed information in formats that are easily accessible to computers and mobile devices. It includes statewide maps of demographic information, political boundaries, environmental and agricultural information, infrastructure and geological resources.
"IndianaMap is an invaluable digital information utility that maps all of Indiana's physical infrastructure, assets and natural resources," said Philip Worrall, executive director of the Indiana Geographic Information Council, a nonprofit group of GIS users, professionals and educators that manages the site. "I'm thrilled to see IndianaMap receive the national recognition it so richly deserves."
The American Library Association's Notable Government Documents program was established to recognize excellence in government publications, identify documents of distinction and commend superlative individual works. It is part of the association's Notable Documents initiative, which began in 1984 and has been published each year since 1986 in Library Journal. IndianaMap was one of 21 state documents to receive the honor for 2012 and the only one from Indiana.
The project was launched in 2006 and has been continuously updated and refined. Staff at the Indiana Geological Survey, a research institute of Indiana University Bloomington, designed the site and wrote computer applications to make data available in map form.
IndianaMap provides the largest publicly available collection of Indiana GIS map data and is made possible by an alliance of partners from federal and state government, universities, and local organizations and agencies. Users can access easy-to-use interactive Web maps, select from a gallery of predefined maps to view or customize, download free GIS data and metadata and learn about Indiana GIS projects, initiatives and news.
