Afghanistan's ambassador to Australia speaking at Indiana University Bloomington Sept. 19

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Nasir Ahmad Andisha, Afghanistan's ambassador to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, will visit Indiana University Bloomington on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Andisha will speak at room 213 of the IU Maurer School of Law at 7:30 p.m. on the topic, "Afghanistan Post 2014: Challenges, Opportunities and Way Forward."

The ambassador is expected to address the economic, political and security challenges facing Afghanistan at this critical time in its modern history as the combat mission ends and U.S. and NATO forces withdraw from the country in 2014. He will share his vision about the future of Afghanistan and how it will address the major transitions in both the political and security spheres that foreign troop withdrawal will necessitate.

The event, sponsored by the Center on American and Global Security and the Australian National University-Indiana University Pan Asia Institute, is free and open to the public.

Prior to his present diplomatic post, Andisha held several positions within the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as director general of the Fifth Political Division (U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand), from 2009 to 2011; director of multilateral economic relations and international financial institutions, in 2006-07; and chief of staff for the deputy foreign minister, in 2005-06.

Andisha also worked as a consultant at the Energy Charter Secretariat in Brussels and briefly in 2008 at the Permanent Mission of Afghanistan at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. Before entering foreign service, he worked with the International Committee of the Red Cross as a field officer. He also taught international relations and principles of economics at the Institute of Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan.

In 2007, he received a Fulbright Scholarship and completed a masters degree in international affairs at the George H. Bush School of Government and Public Services at Texas A&M University. He also has an Advanced Security Studies Diploma from the Marshall Centre for European Studies in Garmisch, Germany and the Asia Pacific Centre for Security Studies in Hawaii.

He also attended the executive education program in the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at the Australian National University.
