BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Health Center has achieved accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, certifying that the center, which accommodates about 80,000 student visits annually, meets nationally recognized standards for the provision of quality health care.

The IU Health Center, at the corner of Jordan Avenue and 10th Street at IU Bloomington, comprises a pharmacy, lab and various medical, mental health and wellness services, all of which receive accreditation from applicable organizations. The IU Health Center's lab recently renewed its accreditation from COLA, also a national accreditation organization.

The IU Health Center and lab received zero deficiencies during both accreditation examinations, which Executive Director Peter Grogg described as intensive -- the all-encompassing accreditation received by the Health Center addressed 644 standards covering a range of 29 categories, including compliance with best practices for clinical care; appropriateness of diagnostic testing and prescribing; governance; customer satisfaction; and cash handling.

"The AAAHC accreditation is voluntary for the facility," Grogg said, "but it's an excellent way to receive an objective third-party evaluation to make sure we're achieving the quality of care and high standards that we set for ourselves."

The IU Health Center will see about two-thirds of all students during the school year and also has limited programs for faculty and staff. Despite the strong accreditation results, Grogg said center staff will be working with IU Market Research to examine why the remaining one-third of students do not come to the IU Health Center to see if there are ways to better meet their needs. The center will also be working closely with the university's Organizational Development staff to identify areas to improve customer service and the overall patient experience.
