Indiana schools selected as implementation sites to improve teacher quality

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana Center on Teacher Quality has selected five schools districts and one charter school to implement a process to improve student learning by providing a continuum of instruction from highly effective teachers.
Personnel from the Indiana University-based center will work intensively with teachers and other staff in the schools to establish comprehensive job-embedded professional growth and support that are driven by district-level data.
Activities will focus on system supports and structures across the districts, schools and classrooms to improve teacher quality to meet academic and behavioral needs of all students. Also, the center will support selected teachers in the schools who seek to gain National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification.
The districts and school selected to implement the project are:
- Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp.
- Monroe County Community School Corp.
- Paramount School of Excellence, Indianapolis
- Indianapolis Public Schools
- Greater Clark County School Corp.
- Anderson Community Schools
Goals and objectives of the project are grounded in the concept of educational equity for teachers and students. It builds on and supports Indiana’s Imagine 2020 efforts in critical areas such as creating culturally responsive classrooms, recruitment and retaining teachers, and supporting teacher and principal effectiveness.
The Indiana Center on Teacher Quality was created by Indiana University's Center on Education and Lifelong Learning and the Center on Community Living and Careers, both part of the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community. Funding for the center comes from a $5 million State Personnel Development federal grant to the Indiana Department of Education.
