IU Bloomington faculty members named Academic Leadership Program fellows

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington faculty members in history, international studies, law, public health and education will serve as 2016-17 fellows for the Academic Leadership Program.

The program helps develop leadership skills of professors who may pursue careers in academic administration. It is sponsored by the Big Ten Academic Alliance, made up of the 14 universities in the Big Ten conference and the University of Chicago.

Participants will attend three seminars hosted by alliance universities and will take part in campus-based meetings and programs with administrative leaders. IU Bloomington fellows are:

  • Nick Cullather, executive associate dean and professor of history and international studies in the School of Global and International Studies.
  • Carrie Docherty, associate professor, director of the Post-Professional Athletic Training Program and interim associate dean for community and global engagement in the School of Public Health-Bloomington.
  • Jayanth Krishnan, professor of law, Charles L. Whistler Faculty Fellow and director of the Center on the Global Legal Profession in the Maurer School of Law.
  • Sylvia Martinez, associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies in the School of Education and director of Latino studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • John Nieto-Phillips, associate vice provost for faculty development and diversity and associate professor of history and Latino studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Big Ten Academic member universities select faculty to participate in the Academic Leadership Program, which combines the resources of alliance institutions to provide training in academic administration.

“Investing in our faculty is essential to the future excellence of IU Bloomington,” said Eliza Pavalko, vice provost for faculty and academic affairs. “I am pleased that these current and future faculty leaders will benefit from the training and assistance provided by the Big Ten Alliance and its member institutions."

Cullather is a historian of U.S. foreign relations, specializing in the history of intelligence, development and nation-building. He serves as editor of the journal Diplomatic History and is the author of “The Hungry World: America’s Cold War Battle Against Poverty in Asia.” He has won Fulbright grants to the Philippines and Singapore and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.

Docherty’s research has focused on the proper assessment and prevention of ankle instability. She developed the Ankle Instability Instrument to provide a more objective means to properly identify this common phenomenon. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.

Krishnan teaches courses in property, comparative law and immigration. His research focuses on the global legal profession, the behavior of lawyers, the globalization of law and legal education. The recipient of the law school’s Leon Wallace Teaching Award and the IU Trustees’ Teaching Award, he has a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Martinez is a sociologist with research interest in the experiences of Latino youth, particularly issues of school engagement, such as whether Latino youth are challenged academically and how they view such challenges. She received a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago.

Nieto-Phillips’ research and teaching examine how ideas about race, language and ethnicity have shaped relations of Latinos and Latinas with the U.S. body politic. His book “The Language of Blood” examines those relations in the context of New Mexico’s struggle for admission to the U.S. He has a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.

About the Academic Leadership Program

Established in 1989, the Academic Leadership Program has developed leadership and managerial skills of nearly 1,000 fellows, many of whom have gone on to serve with distinction as college presidents, provosts and deans. The program is oriented to address the challenges of academic administration at major research universities and to help faculty members prepare to meet them.
