FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Organizers at Indiana University, the City of Bloomington and Cutters Soccer are once again teaming up for the annual Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale, one of Bloomington’s biggest garage sales and waste diversion programs.

The sale, which offers items collected during on- and off-campus student move-out, takes place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at The Warehouse at 1525 S. Rogers St. Admission is $10 before 9:30 a.m. and free the remainder of the day. Admission for IU students with an ID is $5.

Items for sale will include furniture, electronics, housewares, appliances, books and clothing. Items will be priced to sell, and all transactions will be cash only. Last year, the sale had the equivalent of approximately eight semi-trailers worth of donations.

“Since 2012, the Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale has been an integral part of IU Bloomington’s e-waste management plan,” said Noma Maier, Sustainable IT Services project manager for University Information Technology Services at IU. “By collecting unneeded or broken electronics from students during the move-out period in May, we ensure these devices are either reused or properly recycled.”

Parking for the event is free and available at two locations near The Warehouse. Parking directly in front of The Warehouse is reserved for people with handicapped parking stickers and shoppers picking up furniture.

A shuttle will be available for IU students. It will visit The Warehouse six times during the day, picking up students from McNutt, Eigenmann and Forest residence halls.

H2H is a collaboration between IU and the City of Bloomington. Its goal is to divert reusable items from the landfill, prevent additional resource consumption by selling collected items and to raise funds for local charities.

Proceeds from the sale benefit the IU and City of Bloomington sustainability programs, as well as local nonprofits such as the the Bloomington Animal Shelter.

Last year, H2H attracted over 3,000 shoppers and diverted an estimated 60 tons of waste from the landfill. Almost 300 volunteers helped organize last year’s event, working over 1,800 hours to collect and prepare donations for the sale.

"This effort is such an important collaboration between the city and IU, and helps raise awareness throughout the community about the importance of rethinking consumption and reducing waste," said Jacqui Bauer, sustainability coordinator for the City of Bloomington.

Volunteers are still needed leading up to the sale. Those interested in volunteering this week or during the sale can sign up online or email h2h@indiana.edu.
