Leading college guide names IU Bloomington a 'best buy'

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington has been named a “best buy” by the Fiske Guide to Colleges for the third straight year and for the fourth time in five years.

It is one of 21 public colleges and universities to receive the designation, based on academic quality and affordability, in the Fiske Guide for 2017. Twenty-six private institutions were also named best buys.

“We are pleased again this year to be recognized by Fiske as a best buy school,” said David B. Johnson, IU Bloomington vice provost for enrollment management. “We are dedicated to keeping an IU degree a good value for Hoosier families through our significant financial aid programs.

“We know that the increased earning potential of a college degree over the long term of a student’s career is clear,” Johnson said. “We want to make sure that our grads are not overburdened in their early career years by excessive debt.”

The Fiske Guide to Colleges was founded in 1982 by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske and is considered one of the most comprehensive guides for students and parents, providing information on more than 300 colleges and universities.

For more than 30 years, the guide has chosen a select group of schools for its annual best buy list. Most of the best buys fall into the guide’s inexpensive or moderate price category, and most have academic ratings of four or five stars. For 2017, IU Bloomington is listed as moderately priced and received four stars for academics.

Indiana University and IU Bloomington have taken extensive steps to remain affordable, including a freeze on Indiana resident undergraduate tuition in 2015-16 and 2016-17. Undergraduate tuition increases for the previous two academic years averaged only 1.75 percent.

The IU Office of Student Financial Literacy, established in 2012, played a pivotal role in a 16 percent decline in student borrowing over the past three years, resulting in approximately $82.5 million in student debt reduction. The IU student loan debt letter, which provides students with information about debt amount and repayment prospects, has won national attention and been adopted by other colleges and universities.

IU Bloomington was named a best buy in the 2013 edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges and again in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 editions.
