FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Office of Sustainability is offering high-impact learning opportunities to students for its 10th year, recruiting 13 undergraduates and graduate students for the Summer Internship Program in Sustainability.

The program is part of IU’s 2020 Transitions Lab, where all segments of campus operations -- energy systems, buildings, food systems, transportation systems and research labs -- are used by faculty and students for learning and researching sustainability.

“Sustainability is a broad, interdisciplinary challenge that requires engagement from all disciplines,” said Andrew Predmore, associate director of the IU Office of Sustainability.

The internship program is hands-on, with opportunities to pursue research interests and grow as a campus leader. Using the campus as a living-learning laboratory, students engage in experiential learning and systems-based problem-solving. Internship positions focus on topics such as energy and the built environment, communications and marketing, food, and sustainable computing, to name a few.

Students will have faculty and staff mentors who guide them through a summer research plan, culminating in the annual Summer Sustainability Symposium on Aug. 5, 2016.

The position can open doors to students seeking careers in the sustainability sector, said University Director of Sustainability Bill Brown.

“All of our over 270 past student sustainability interns have left their legacy and made Indiana University a more sustainable place to learn, live, work and play,” he said. “Many now lead sustainability programs in higher education, government, nonprofit and corporate realms.”

Positions are paid, and some students may be able to continue their work into the 2016-17 academic year. The complete list of internships is available online. The program is sponsored jointly by the Office of the Provost and the Office of the Vice President for Capital Planning and Facilities.

The IU Office of Sustainability will accept applications and recommendation letters until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14. Applications may be submitted online. Questions regarding undergraduate research, internships or the application process can be directed to Makayla Bonney at mjbonney@indiana.edu.
