FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Ambassador Riyad H. Mansour, permanent observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, will visit Indiana University and speak at its Maurer School of Law on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

Mansour will speak on the theme "States of Palestine at the International Arena: A Discussion on Current Events in Palestine," beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Room 123 of the IU Maurer School.

He is being hosted by the Center for the Study of the Middle East in the IU School of Global and International Studies. The Center on American and Global Security is co-sponsoring the event, which is free and open to the public.

Mansour has been engaged in Palestinian diplomatic service since 1983 at the Permanent Observer Mission of the Palestinian Liberation Organization to the U.N. He was appointed U.N. ambassador and permanent observer of Palestine in 2005.

After the State of Palestine applied for official U.N. membership in 2011 and was granted non-member observer status in 2012, Mansour became its ambassador and permanent observer. He also is Palestine's nonresident ambassador to Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

From 1977 to 1983, he served as a research adviser at the permanent mission of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen.

Born in a refugee family that lived in Ramallah in the Occupied West Bank, Mansour pursued higher education in the United States, earning a Master of Science in education counseling from Youngstown State University in 1973 and a doctorate in counseling from the University of Akron in 1977. Before joining the PLO, he taught at both universities.

He also has been engaged in the private sector, serving as vice president of Intram Investments Inc., representing the Florida company's governmental relationships and as a land strategist. He also has been a consultant to Laventhal and Slaughter P.A., an Orlando-based law firm, and an adjunct professor of political science at the University of Central Florida.
