Deloitte and 3M win inaugural Analytics Leadership Award from IU Kelley School of Business
Kelley Institute for Business Analytics oversaw competition

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Teams from Deloitte Consulting LLP and 3M Co. emerged as co-winners of the inaugural award presented by the Indiana University Kelley School of Business that promotes innovative adoption of analytics within corporations.
"Applying analytical rigor -- including optimization, predictive analytics, forecasting -- to decision-making is a core pillar of business management," said Ash Soni, executive associate dean of programs at Kelley. "These projects, presented by companies who recognize the value of analytics in decision-making, were seen by the panel of judges as path-breaking on innovation."
The Analytics Leadership Award was created to highlight today’s important and rapid adoption of sophisticated analytics for improving productivity, increasing profits, reducing costs, managing risks and creating a competitive advantage for organizations worldwide.
Deloitte won for its branded SPANalytics solution product, which helps clients capture value by reducing their products' end-to-end delivery lead times by 20 to 30 percent; reduces inventories by 10 to 20 percent; and cuts total product costs.

The team from Deloitte included Shepley, Mark Neier, Matt Griffin, Dan Haynes, Kevin Hua and Alex Carr.
3M won for a project that focused on revenue forecasting. Its team consisted of Ron Hoffner, Jon Arthur and Nate Smith.
“3M's Revenue Forecast project focused on novel methods for time series forecasting using secure, massive parallel processing in the Cloud," said Hoffner, senior manager for strategic business development at 3M. "The project has the potential to generate benefits in improved forecast accuracy, productivity and business intelligence for 3M.”
Another team from Deloitte Transactions and Business Analytics LLP was a runner-up and received honorable mention for analytics around fraud detection services for the Internal Revenue Service.
Nominations were sought from teams who played a leadership role in an analytics initiative in the past three years. They were evaluated by a committee composed of Jerry Oglesby, senior director, global academic program and global certification, at SAS; Dion Rudnicki, vice president, business development, global public sector, sales and distribution, IBM Corp.; Elissa Fink, chief marketing officer, Tableau; and Bill Russell, executive vice president, Allegient LLC.
Founded in 2011, the Institute for Business Analytics supports academic programs that prepare students to solve business problems using analytics; develops corporate partnerships that shape the school's understanding of analytics; and helps companies tap into Kelley's talent. It also supports cross-disciplinary research by faculty and organizes seminars, conferences and data competitions. It is co-directed by Vijay Khatri, associate professor of information systems and the Arthur M. Weimer Faculty Fellow, and Frank Acito, also a professor of marketing and the Max Barney Distinguished Teaching Fellow.
