Nine students from Indiana selected as 2014-15 Kelley Scholars

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Nine incoming Indiana University freshmen from across the Hoosier state have been selected as Kelley Scholars by the Kelley School of Business.

The Kelley Scholars, who intend to major in business at IU Bloomington, will receive standard tuition and fees, a stipend for living expenses and funding for academic activities such as overseas study.

The Kelley Scholars Program is funded by a $23 million gift from E.W. Kelley and his family, made to IU in the fall of 1997. The university named its school of business for the Kelley family in acknowledgement of the gift.

This year's class of Kelley Scholars was selected from a group of top students admitted to IU, who were invited to apply for the program because of their outstanding academic records. The application included references, a high school transcript, several personal statements on a variety of topics and an essay.

The 2014-15 Kelley Scholars are:

• Abigail Aylward, the daughter of John and Michele Aylward of Fishers, Ind. -- A graduate of Fishers High School, she was a member of the National Honor Society, We the People, Campus Life, the speech team, the volleyball team, the model United Nations team and the Broad Based Planning Committee for High Ability Programs. She also served as volunteer at Connor Prairie, coached the junior volleyball team, was a counselor at Camp Tecumseh and participated in foreign exchange student and theater programs.
• Andrew Bentivoglio, the son of Joseph and Nora Bentivoglio of Westfield, Ind. -- A graduate of St. Theodore Guerin Catholic High School, he was valedictorian, a National Merit Finalist and senior class student body co-president. He also was a DECA Medalist at state competition and an Indiana Association of School Principals 2014 Indiana Academic All-Star. He received the IHSAA C. Eugene Cato Memorial Scholarship. He was an Eagle Scout, captain of the cross country and track and field teams and vice president of Temple Knights of the Holy Eucharist at St. Maria Goretti.
• Alyssa Fain, the daughter of Jim and Shelley Fain of Greenwood, Ind. -- A graduate of Center Grove High School, she was a member of the Spanish National Honor Society and the National Honor Society and president of Glamour Gals. She was named the keynote speaker and outstanding girl at Hoosier Girls State and an AP Scholar. She also was involved with the girl's tennis team, student government and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
• Maria Halloran, the daughter of Vivian and David Halloran of Bloomington, Ind. -- A graduate of Bloomington High School North, she was president of her school's Riley Dance Marathon committee, a national competitor in Business Professionals of America and a Cougar Leader. She received the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award and was a National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar and an Educational Theater Association Democracyworks essay winner.
• Rachel Hentz, the daughter of Rob and Diane Hentz of Fort Wayne, Ind. -- A graduate of Bishop Dwenger High School, she captained the cross country team, was vice president of the Spanish Club and chapter co-president and a state committee member of Future Business Leaders of America. She was a member of the National Honor Society and received two Gold Keys in visual arts.
• Brandon Luebbehusen, the son of Chris and Angie Luebbehusen of Saint Anthony, Ind. -- A graduate of Forest Park Junior/Senior High School, he was valedictorian and president of the senior class, student council and National Honor Society. He was a four-year member of the soccer team, a National Merit Commended Scholar and delegate to 2013 National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. He received the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award.
• Daniel Resner, the son of Susan and Tom Resner of Indianapolis -- A graduate of Lawrence North High School, he was an All-Star volleyball player, a board member of the Lawrence Township Basketball League and a member of the National Honor Society. He was recognized for his public speaking and debate skills and received the Superintendent Award. He traveled to Washington, D.C. as a member of the national moot court team for Lawrence North.
• Josh Shalen, the son of Jonathan and Linda Shalen of Munster, Ind. -- A graduate of Munster High School with highest academic honors, he was very involved in speech team activities, including as a national qualifier, as secretary and treasurer of his school's speech team and as a member of the National Speech and Debate Association. An Academic All-American, he also was a member of the National Honor Society, an international qualifier in DECA, an AP Scholar and a Hoosier Boys State delegate. He was president of the NOAR Jewish Youth Group and a varsity member of the boy's soccer team and the Academic All-State Soccer Team. He received the We the People Social Studies Department Award and the Principal’s Award of Excellence.
• Tanner Snider, the son of John and Tanya Snider of Vincennes, Ind. -- A graduate of South Knox High School, he was very involved in Business Professionals of America, coming in third nationally and first in Indiana in extemporaneous speaking, and in fifth nationally and first in Indiana in advanced interview skills. He co-founded and led Down With Depression, a community service project. He also was a teen writer for the Huffington Post and was the Indiana state champion prosecuting attorney at Teen Court Mock Trial.
