IU Bloomington Institute for Advanced Study issues funding in inaugural round of new programs

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- More than two dozen Indiana University Bloomington associate professors have received approximately $160,000 in funding awards through new programs developed by the Institute for Advanced Study on the Bloomington campus.
The Institute for Advanced Study, previously a multidisciplinary research center, is now focused on developing the research and creative work of associate professors. Supported by the IU Bloomington Office of the Vice Provost for Research, the institute's new mission is to enhance the exposure, attention and funding that the work of IU Bloomington’s associate professors receives and to assist in timely promotions to the rank of full professor.
"Investment in faculty is a central goal of IU Bloomington’s strategic plan, and the reorientation of the Institute for Advanced Study aligns perfectly with that goal," said Lauren Robel, provost and executive vice president on the IU Bloomington campus. "With its new focus, the institute will foster significant professional development of our faculty and will enhance research and creative activity on this campus."
New internal funding opportunities for associate professors are a key part of the support the institute now offers.
"Associate professors as a group need more support in every way," said Eileen Julien, director of the Institute for Advanced Study, who was appointed in 2013. "The institute’s seed funding is meant to help Bloomington’s associate professors boost their publications, performances and exhibits, and obtain larger externally funded research awards. Ultimately, the institute’s ambition is to be a locus of intellectual vitality and community."
The new funding opportunities include Individual Research Awards of up to $3,000; Collaborative Fellowships of up to $10,000 for groups of faculty sharing expertise on a project; and Consultation Fellowships of up to $10,000 to support collaborations with colleagues from other institutions.
The Institute for Advanced Study is also sponsoring informal discussion groups to help associate professors develop new research ideas and more formal conferences intended to refine ideas about current and future research directions.
