Ciccarelli appointed dean of Hutton Honors College at IU Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Andrea Ciccarelli has been named dean of the Hutton Honors College at Indiana University Bloomington. He is professor of Italian and chair of the Department of French and Italian in the College of Arts and Sciences.

IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Lauren Robel announced the appointment today. It will take effect July 1, pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees.

Matthew Auer, former dean of the college, left last year to become vice president of academic affairs at Bates College. Fritz Breithaupt, professor of Germanic studies, served as interim dean.

"Andrea will be a creative and thoughtful leader for the Hutton Honors College," Robel said. "He is highly respected by his colleagues and has an outstanding record as a scholar and as a teacher. His administrative experience as director of the College Arts and Humanities Institute, chair of his department and director of an active overseas study program will serve Hutton well as it moves into the next phase. I am delighted that he has agreed to accept this immensely important position as the honors college is poised to become a central hub for interdisciplinary curricula on the campus."

Ciccarelli said he looks forward to working with the students, staff and faculty of the honors college, a special place that offers small classes on a broad variety of topics and links them to extracurricular activities that engage and enrich the students.

"Serving as dean of the Hutton Honors College is one of the most exciting positions that a great institution such as Indiana University has to offer," he said. "The students in the college are among the best in the country, and have been and will continue to be part of the strongest fabric of our society, serving as professionals, educators, scientists, civil servants and philanthropists."

He said it will be a "great honor, challenge and responsibility" to lead the Hutton Honors College at a time of dramatic change in higher education and opportunities for interdisciplinary studies that link the liberal arts, scientific disciplines and professional education to create new opportunities for students.

Ciccarelli's research focuses on the classical tradition in modern Italian literature and on migration, boundaries and exile in contemporary Italian culture. He has taught classes on the Italian Renaissance, the myth of Rome in modern culture, contemporary Italian culture and other topics.

He directed the College Arts and Humanities Institute in the College of Arts and Sciences from 2001 to 2011, has served as chair of the Department of French and Italian for many years, and directed IU's Overseas Study Program in Florence. He has been editor of Italica, the journal of the American Association of Teachers of Italian, since 2004.

He has a Ph.D. in Italian studies and a Master of Arts in Italian and comparative literature, both from Columbia University, and an advanced degree from Sapienza University of Rome.

The Hutton Honors College recruits diverse, talented and highly motivated students whose presence on campus serves to enhance the education of all undergraduates. The college is named for Edward L. Hutton, an IU alumnus and a prominent philanthropist and businessman who provided generous support for honors and international studies at IU Bloomington. Hutton died in March 2009, a month before the new honors college building bearing his name at the corner of Seventh Street and Woodlawn Avenue was dedicated.
