IU Bloomington Health Programs Fair helps students prepare for health care careers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University students will have an opportunity to learn about a wide variety of career opportunities in health care at the 12th annual IU Bloomington Health Programs Fair.
The fair, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in the Indiana Memorial Union Alumni Hall. The event will help students plan for their future success by giving them an opportunity to meet with recruiters from medical schools and health professions programs and learn about the admissions process.
Representatives from more than 100 schools, programs and organizations will be available at the fair to meet with students and answer questions about educational and career opportunities. Information will be available on health care careers in direct patient care, laboratory work, administration, information technology and other areas.
Medical school representatives will answer fair attendees’ questions and discuss what the schools are seeking in order to prepare prospective applicants. The fair also allows students to learn about many little-known areas of health care.
"Students preparing for medical school or health programs will have a chance at the fair to speak directly with people who may be reviewing their applications in the future," said Rachel Tolen, assistant director of the IU Bloomington Health Professions and Prelaw Center. "This informal networking can sometimes help them gain a competitive edge in admission."
Student interest in health care careers remains high, amid reports that jobs in the health care sector will continue to grow. Historically 700 to 900 students attend the Health Programs Fair each year.
This year, IU’s Health Professions and Prelaw Center collaborated with colleagues at Purdue University’s Center for Pre-Professional Advising to bring representatives to the Purdue campus for a fair the day before, allowing more students from Indiana to meet with schools from across the US.
IU academic departments will send representatives to the fair to discuss majors and courses that help prepare students for medicine and other health fields. Students will also be able to speak with representatives of health-related student organizations and volunteer agencies from the Bloomington area at the fair.
The fair is organized by the Health Professions and Prelaw Center and is co-sponsored by the IU departments of Applied Health Science, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Human Biology, Kinesiology, Nursing, Physics, Psychological and Brain Sciences, Sociology, and Speech and Hearing Sciences.

The Health Professions and Prelaw Center, a program of the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, provides advising and other services for students who want to pursue careers in law, medicine and other health professions.
