IU Bloomington admissions adds position, realigns staff to focus on diversity

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Office of Enrollment Management at Indiana University Bloomington has realigned staff and resources and hired an Indianapolis-based associate director of admissions to create more effective recruitment and outreach for prospective students from underrepresented populations.
Khala Granville has been appointed associate director of admissions with responsibility for diversity-oriented student recruitment and outreach in Indianapolis and the surrounding areas. She served most recently as executive director of the Brightwood Community Center in Indianapolis and formerly was undergraduate student admissions coordinator at the University of Louisville.
“Khala Granville is a welcome addition to our recruiting team," said David B. Johnson, vice provost for enrollment management. "She will hit the ground running as she is already located in Indianapolis and has strong relationships with community-based organizations. With Khala as part of our diversity recruiting team, we have an even greater opportunity to make personal connections with prospective students, their families and school counselors, helping them to see IU Bloomington as a place where they will flourish and go on to successful careers.”
Granville has a Master of Divinity degree from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis and has interned and volunteered with several community organizations in the city. She will be part of a newly restructured IU Bloomington admissions team that also includes four staff members in Bloomington. A senior associate director of admissions, a position held on an interim basis by Larry Gonzalez, will lead the team, which will focus on expanding and refocusing the campus's diversity recruiting.
"This initiative demonstrates the high priority that IU Bloomington places on attracting and meeting the needs of students from groups that have been underrepresented in higher education," said Provost and Executive Vice President Lauren Robel. "By improving outreach and strengthening connections with schools, community organizations and businesses, the Office of Enrollment Management will help ensure the campus serves a diverse student population that is representative of the state of Indiana."
"Obviously, there is a wealth of talented and determined underrepresented minority students located within Indianapolis," said Martin McCrory, Indiana University associate vice president for diversity, equity and multicultural affairs and IU Bloomington vice provost for educational inclusion and diversity. "I look forward to working with David and Khala to reach out to these students and, ultimately, to welcome them to IU Bloomington with its many resources and programs to help them achieve their goals."
The restructuring reflects recognition that Indianapolis represents an extraordinary opportunity for diversity recruitment and networking. Granville will direct efforts to help IU Bloomington meet its enrollment goals with a focus on outreach through the "six C's" of community organizations, counselors in high schools, camps, competitions, churches and community colleges.
Community outreach was part of the employee search that led to Granville's appointment. Debbie Zipes, president of the Indianapolis-based Indiana Afterschool Network, chaired the search committee.
