FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Chinese students at Indiana University will mark the Year of the Horse with events on campus and in the community, including a Spring Festival Gala on Friday, Feb. 7.

The IU Chinese Scholars and Students Association is organizing the gala, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the IU Auditorium, 1211 E. Seventh St.

Chinese food will be served from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by a live show from 7 to 9 p.m. The show will feature singers and other musical performers, as well as comedic "cross-talk" and sketches, performed in Mandarin. All of the entertainers will be IU students. The gala is free and open to the public.

“We have the obligation to promote Chinese culture at IU for representing the largest international students group: Chinese students,” said Xu Wang, president of the IU Chinese Scholars and Students Association. “Chinese students may miss their home a lot, especially those who just came abroad to study. Helping them feel more comfortable and get used to an unfamiliar environment are our priorities and tenets.”

The association has served Chinese students since the 1990s and today is the largest international student organization at IU Bloomington. More than 3,000 Chinese students are enrolled on campus.

Another group on the IU campus, Asian Cultures Around Campus, will present "Lunar New Year Celebration: It’s the Year of the Horse," from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Monroe County Public Library, 303 E. Kirkwood Ave.

It will feature stories, performances, crafts and snacks to celebrate the beginning of the Lunar New Year. No registration is necessary.

Children should be accompanied by an adult. Stories and performances will start at 2 p.m. in the Library Auditorium, and crafts for kids will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. in meeting rooms next to the auditorium. For more information, contact Vivian Chen or Laura Baumann at acc@indiana.edu.
