IU Bloomington receives Institutional Award of Excellence for work in student conduct and ethics

Indiana University Bloomington recently received the 2013-14 Institutional Award of Excellence from the Association for Student Conduct Administration.

The award honors a college or university that is engaged at the highest level in the best practices of student conduct administration and rewards leadership, outreach and innovative systems that ultimately foster inclusiveness.

IU Bloomington's Office of Student Ethics was recognized for programs related to Title IX , academic integrity, development of student-based learning outcomes, assessment and evaluation.

Among other aspects of IU's Title IX programs that were highlighted in the citation were:

• Creation, implementation and success of an effective Title IX sexual misconduct training model.
• Development of assessment and evaluation-based criteria for learning based outcomes.
• Creation, implementation and success of the academic integrity seminar.
• Creation of effective strategies to move away from "sanctions" toward the development of action plans.

The association noted that IU truly epitomized what it means to work with students.

"This is the highest possible student conduct and ethics honor for an institution, and we're proud to bring such prestigious recognition to Indiana University and the Division of Student Affairs," said Jason Casares, associate dean of students and director of IU's Office of Student Ethics. "The award demonstrates that IU is, in fact, leading the student conduct and student affairs profession through innovation, creativity and the development of unique strategies designed to improve and support the student experience."

The Office of Student Ethics is part of IU's Dean of Students Office in the Division of Student Affairs. The office is responsible for educating students regarding ethical decision-making and civility and facilitating the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Conduct adjudication processes. The fundamental goal of the office is to offer students the opportunity to learn from thinking errors, provide skill-based education and to support those students as they move toward graduation.

"We share the award with our campus and Bloomington partners who have been phenomenal resources for our students," Casares said. "We are certainly proud of the accomplishment."

The Association for Student Conduct Administration has more than 2,800 members in the United States and Canada and internationally, representing more than 700 institutions of higher education. The award will be presented Saturday, Feb. 8, at the ASCA National Conference in St. Pete Beach, Fla.
