Indiana University sets spring-semester records for enrollment, credit hours

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University has set spring-semester enrollment records for the number of students and for credit hours on the Bloomington and Kokomo campuses. Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and IU East also set new marks for credit hours.

A record 98,462 students are enrolled on the seven campuses administered by Indiana University. Adding IU students enrolled at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, which has not yet released spring numbers, will push the total beyond 100,000 for the fifth straight year.

Enrollment was buoyed by IU Bloomington's inclusion for the first time this year of about 3,100 high school students, most of them enrolled in Advanced College Project courses. Without those students, numbers for IU Bloomington and the university would fall just short of spring-semester records.

The high school students were included in IU Bloomington figures for the first time last fall as a result of a change in enrollment processing. Without them, the campus's spring enrollment would still have increased by about 1 percent from last year and topped 40,000 for the fourth time.

IU Kokomo continued a pattern of strong growth with increases of 11.9 percent in enrollment and 8.4 percent in credit hours. Enrollment also increased at IU Bloomington, IUPUI and IU Northwest. Credit hours increased at those four campuses and at IU East and IU Northwest.

University-wide, enrollment increased by 4.3 percent from last year, and credit hours increased by 2 percent. Without the IU Bloomington high school students, total enrollment grew by 1 percent.

Official campus figures include:

• IU Bloomington -- 43,338 students, up 9 percent; 536,072.5 credit hours, up 2.5 percent
• IUPUI -- 28,733 students, up 1 percent; 338,875.5 credit hours, up 2.5 percent
• IU East -- 3,856 students, down 0.4 percent; 35,768.5 credit hours, up 1 percent
• IU Kokomo -- 3,648 students, up 11.9 percent; 34,331 credit hours, up 8.4 percent
• IU Northwest -- 5,570 students, up 2.9 percent; 55,701 credit hours, up 1.3 percent
• IU South Bend -- 7,226 students, down 2.9 percent; 67,639 credit hours, down 3.1 percent
• IU Southeast -- 6,091 students, down 1.2 percent; 62,070.5 credit hours, down 0.6 percent

Spring semester classes at all IU campuses began Jan. 13. Official enrollment reports, when completed, will be available at the website of University Institutional Research and Reporting.
