IU Office of Sustainability seeks applicants for peer educator program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Bloomington Office of Sustainability is seeking undergraduate student applicants for the Sustainability Peer Educator Program, an initiative created to foster the culture of sustainability among students.

This spring, program organizers will train hired peer educators to teach a set of sustainability lessons, focusing first on energy and water conservation and waste minimization. Peer educators will serve with the program for the 2014-15 academic year.

After providing foundational knowledge in the topic area, each lesson will be designed to engage students in a conversation about sustainable and unsustainable behaviors relating to that topic. Ultimately, attendees will be provided tools for committing to a set of sustainable behaviors they choose. Initially, peer educators will tailor lessons to the Greek community and first-year students living in the residence halls.

"We feel this program will be incredibly valuable for all of our stakeholders," said Emilie Rex, assistant director of sustainability. "From unparalleled leadership and professional experiences for students to cost-saving and educational enrichment opportunities for partners like Residential Programs and Services and our Greek community, the program has a great deal of potential."

Peer educators also will assist in the creation of educational materials, represent the peer educator program and the Office of Sustainability at related events and manage communications via email and social media.

Applicants must be undergraduates who will attend Indiana University Bloomington during the 2014-15 academic year. Individuals with backgrounds in education, social psychology, environmental studies or sustainability are especially encouraged to apply. Peer educators will be compensated at $10 per hour with a requirement of 10 hours per week for the entire year. Priority will be given to students with federal work-study awards for the 2014-15 academic year.

Individuals interested in the program should fill out the interest form. Additional program details are available on the Office of Sustainability website. To be considered with the first round of applicants to the program, interest forms should be submitted before Jan. 15, 2014.
