Alan Ewert honored with Association for Experiential Education's 2013 Distinguished Researcher Award

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Alan Ewert, interim chair of the Department of Environmental Health at the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington, has received the Association for Experiential Education's 2013 Distinguished Researcher Award.

Ewert, who holds the Patricia and Joel Meier Endowed Chair of Outdoor Leadership, is also president of the Academy of Leisure Sciences.

"Dr. Ewert is such a great asset to the school and to Indiana University," said Mohammad Torabi, dean and Chancellor’s Professor at the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington. "His selection as a recipient of this prestigious award is highly fitting given his dedication to innovation in teaching and learning at the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington."

The experiential educational approach encourages interaction between a teacher and student, which infuses direct experience with the learning environment and content, typically yielding better outcomes.

"I am truly honored to receive this award. The recognition from peers is both humbling and gratifying," Ewert said. "Experiential education is a passion of mine; I believe it can transform and enrich the student experience."

Ewert was presented with the award last month during the 41st Annual International Conference of the Association for Experiential Education in Denver.

The Association for Experiential Education is a nonprofit, professional membership association dedicated to experiential education and the students, educators and practitioners who utilize its philosophy. A wide variety of members make up the association, including ropes course operators; school, college and university staff and faculty; therapists; outdoor education practitioners; organizational development specialists; experience-based professionals working in nonprofit, private and academic settings; and members of other areas of experiential education.
