IU Bloomington recognized in U.S. News rankings as one of top colleges for veterans

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington is one of the top 10 best colleges in the nation for veterans, according to a new ranking produced by U.S. News and World Report.
The Bloomington campus is seventh on the list of national universities, which includes colleges participating in federal initiatives that help veterans and active service members apply, pay for and complete their degrees.
"It is exceptionally rewarding to see this recognition of all the efforts of our students, staff and administration," said Margaret Baechtold, director of IU Bloomington's Veterans Support Services office. "I'm so proud of the resources and support the campus and university provide to our military and veteran students and their families."
Veterans Support Services serves military students and their families in various ways, including navigating the often-confusing rules for veterans benefits and financial assistance; supporting them before, during and after deployment; and providing them with information about Veterans Affairs health benefits, as well as details about vocational rehabilitation, counseling and disability services.
The office works closely with IU Bloomington's Army ROTC Screaming Bison Battalion and its Air Force ROTC Detachment 215, the Wild Aces, as well as the IU chapter of Student Veterans of America.
The Bloomington campus is also home to the Golden Book, which records the names of military veterans connected to IU as far back as the War of 1812.
The Best Colleges for Veterans rankings include numerically ranked schools in the 2014 edition of the U.S. News Best Colleges that met several criteria, after which U.S. News ranked the qualifying schools numerically and in descending order based on their 2014 Best Colleges ranks.
In September, U.S. News announced IU Bloomington jumped eight positions on its list of "best national universities," from 83rd to 75th overall, and 31st among public research universities in that group, up from 36th a year ago.
