IU Bloomington expands partnership with Institute for Defense and Business

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington has formalized an agreement with the North Carolina-based Institute for Defense and Business calling for collaboration on research and education that serves the needs of the U.S. military, governmental agencies and the private sector.
Lauren Robel, the IU Bloomington provost and university executive vice president, and Mark Cramer, president of the Institute for Defense and Business, signed a memorandum of understanding detailing the agreement today in a ceremony at the Wells House in Bloomington.
The agreement builds upon an existing partnership through which the IU Kelley School of Business and the Institute for Defense and Business provide degree programs and training designed around global business, logistics and strategic management.
"This partnership creates an extraordinary opportunity for Indiana University to help meet the educational needs of professionals in the military, government and the private sector," Robel said.
The five-year agreement signed Monday anticipates collaborations on conferences, seminars and speaker series; creation and execution of programs for degrees, academic credits, short-course training and noncredit learning; pursuit of federal grants and contracts; and applied research.
It will expand IU Bloomington's engagement with the Institute for Defense and Business to include academic units such as the School of Global and International Studies, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the School of Public Health, the School of Education and IU Online.
“The Institute for Defense and Business was established to provide educational services and research capability to governmental, military, nongovernmental and private-sector organizations," Cramer said. "Indiana University has been a key academic partner in accomplishing that mission for more than a decade, and we very much look forward to growing our collaborative efforts.”
Since 2001, the Institute for Defense and Business and IU's Kelley School of Business have collaborated with the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina to offer a two-year MBA program, called IU-UNC LogMBA, with most instruction delivered online. The institute and the Kelley School also have collaborated on the Strategic Studies Fellows Program for U.S. Army captains. IU faculty have taught in other institute-sponsored programs and participated in institute events.
