Richard Gunderman awarded Spinoza Chair of Medicine at University of Amsterdam

INDIANAPOLIS -- One of most respected international chair positions, the Spinoza Chair in Medicine, was recently received by Richard B. Gunderman, M.D., Ph.D., professor of radiology and imaging sciences at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is scheduled to deliver master classes and a keynote lecture this month at the University of Amsterdam.

“Richard is a stunning teacher and scholar,” said Charles R. Bantz, Indiana University executive vice president and chancellor of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. “His lectures stretch disciplines, explore beliefs, challenge opinions and leave the listener asking questions more thoughtfully than before.”

Gunderman is also professor of pediatrics, medical education, philosophy, liberal arts and philanthropy, and vice chair of education in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at Indiana University. He has received the Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award nine times and the highest teaching award of the Association of Medical Colleges. He is the author of over 380 scholarly publications and a correspondent for The Atlantic. His most recent book is "X-Ray Vision."

“In view of the fact that the most recent recipients have come from Oxford, Johns Hopkins and Harvard, it is an honor to represent Indiana University in this forum,” Gunderman said.

Gunderman will teach master classes at the university, including “Achieving Personal Fulfillment” and “Professionalism Gone Wrong.” He will also deliver the Spinoza Lecture, “Education and the Need for Heroes.” Members of the public are welcome to attend. While in the Netherlands, Gunderman will also deliver the annual lectureship in radiology, “Leadership in Radiology,” at the Dutch Radiology Meeting.

About the Spinoza Chair in Medicine 

Established in 1995 by the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam, the Spinoza Chair is named after Dutch Enlightenment philosopher Baruch Spinoza. Two high-profile laureates a year are chosen for this visiting professorship, one in medicine and one in philosophy.
