IUPUI University Library presents research about libraries, learning and student success

INDIANAPOLIS -- Librarians, teachers, parents and community members are invited to "Libraries, Learning and Student Success" from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Ave. The free event, sponsored by the IUPUI University Library's College Ready, College Bound project, will feature a keynote address by Indiana State Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz. Parking is free, and light refreshments will be served.

College Ready, College Bound is a multiyear project examining the role of high school librarians and library curriculum in student learning, preparation and the transition to college. The project was funded through an initial grant from the Indianapolis Foundation Library Fund, a Central Indiana Community Foundation affiliate.

Libraries and librarians play a central role in facilitating the transition from high school to college. IUPUI librarians are teachers with a wide range of specializations, and they are focused on preparing students for the 21st-century workplace. Library instruction supports student success, helps students understand what academic scholarship is and prepares them to be better researchers, as well as informed citizens. 

“We are hopeful that a model for high school and higher education collaboration will emerge from this initiative, offering a vehicle for optimal alignment between high school and postsecondary education standards, policies and practices,” said David Lewis, University Library dean and president of Academic Libraries of Indiana.

College Ready, College Bound began as conversations about connections, relationships and future partnerships between high school and academic librarians. Under the leadership of Rhonda Huisman, IUPUI University Library's education librarian, and a second grant from the Indianapolis Foundation Library Fund, College Ready, College Bound has been able to build on these conversations and gather data about the impact of school librarians at the high school and university levels, their common challenges and best practices. The “Libraries, Learning and Student Success" program will expand the conversation to the wider Indianapolis community.
