Regenstrief Institute names Thane Peterson as its first executive operating officer
INDIANAPOLIS -- Thane J. Peterson, MPA, has been named the Regenstrief Institute Inc.’s first executive operating officer. Peterson, a highly experienced research administrator, will assume his new duties Aug. 16.
Regenstrief is a distinguished medical research organization dedicated to improving the quality, efficiency and outcomes of health care locally, nationally and globally. The institute is the home of internationally recognized centers of excellence in biomedical and public health informatics, aging, and health services and health systems research.

"His background in both academic research and the private sector, along with his superb interpersonal and leadership skills, make him the perfect person to fulfill this most important position."
The institute is a 501(c)(3) organization closely associated with the Indiana University School of Medicine, Wishard/Eskenazi Health and the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center.
As the institute’s executive operating officer, Peterson will provide leadership, management and vision in support of Regenstrief’s unique mission as an academic research institution and a service organization. He will report to Dr. Tierney.
Peterson, who has worked in both academic institutions and the private sector, has served since 2006 as senior director for contracts and compliance at Telligen, a population health management organization based in West Des Moines, Iowa. He also previously served as director of the Telligen Community Initiative and director of the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration for Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
“Research is and has been my passion since the beginning of my career. I am honored to join such a prestigious research organization that endeavors to address our local, national and global health issues,” Peterson said.
Peterson is a member of the National Contract Management Association, the Society of Research Administrators International and the National Council of University Research Administrators. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance from Iowa State University and a Master of Public Administration from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Regenstrief Institute is a leader in electronic health records, health care data integration, clinical decision support, medical informatics standards, health and quality of life improvement for older adults, health care delivery, and health outcomes. The institute is on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Institute investigators are faculty members of the IU School of Medicine, other schools at IUPUI, or Purdue University.
