IU School of Medicine professor selected for distinguished women's leadership training program
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana University School of Medicine professor Irina Petrache, M.D., has been selected to attend the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia.
Dr. Petrache is one of 54 members of this ELAM class. The one-year fellowship will conclude in May 2014.
ELAM is a core program of the Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership with a mission of advancing women in medicine.
Dr. Petrache was nominated by IU School of Medicine Dean D. Craig Brater, M.D., and she competed for the position with applicants from across the country from all disciplines of academic medicine.
“I am excited about this opportunity to engage in a stimulating learning environment through interactions with wonderful colleagues from various institutions and specialties,” Dr. Petrache said.
Dr. Petrache is the Calvin English Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the vice chair of research in the Department of Medicine. She joined the IU School of Medicine faculty in 2006.
There are more than 800 ELAM alumnae worldwide who serve in a variety of leadership positions including department chairs, research center directors, deans and college presidents, as well as chief executives in health care and accrediting organizations. The program continues a legacy that began in 1850 with the founding of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, the nation’s first women’s medical school and a predecessor of Drexel University College of Medicine.
