INDIANAPOLIS -- What do Donnie and Judy Walsh, Dr. Ora Pescovitz, and Joyce Summers have in common?

They all are owners of sought-after creations of furniture designer and retired art professor Phil Tennant.

The Walshes and other collectors have loaned their pieces of Tennant’s work to the artist for an exhibit opening June 14 at the Herron School of Art and Design.

“Experimental: The Work of Phil Tennant With Selected Herron Alumni” runs June 14 through July 25 at Herron School of Art and Design, 735 W. New York St., on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. The exhibit features the Walshes’ entry table and other furniture designed by Tennant, along with the works of several Herron furniture design alumni.

Tennant founded Herron School of Art and Design’s furniture design program and helped grow the Herron program into one of the top programs in the United States. The upcoming exhibit is a testimony to the professor’s legacy.

“Professor Tennant’s work has been exhibited by galleries, universities and museums nationally and featured in Fine Woodworking, American Craft Magazine and Furniture Studio,” said Herron Dean Valerie Eickmeier. "Over the span of his career, he has developed a rich vocabulary of forms and techniques that beautifully unite balance, structure and expression."

“Experimental” includes works by Tennant, award-winning Herron alumni Cory Robinson and others on display in the Robert B. Berkshire, Dorit & Gerald Paul, and Eleanor Prest Reese galleries at the art school.

An opening reception for the exhibit takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 14. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays.
