IUPUI publications win top creative marketing awards
INDIANAPOLIS --Publications created by two Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis academic units have received top honors in a creative marketing competition administered by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals.
The Robert H. McKinney School of Law and University College at IUPUI earned platinum and gold awards in the 2013 Hermes Creative Awards competition.
The summer 2012 edition of the law school’s alumni magazine, The McKinney Lawyer, received a platinum award, the highest award given, in the publications/magazine category of the competition. McKinney School of Law also received a platinum award in the publications/annual report category for its 2012/2013 The McKinney Lawyer and Dean’s Report. The school publishes two issues of The McKinney Lawyer each year, including the winter issue that incorporates the dean’s report. The alumni magazine has a total mailing of about 11,500.
“McKinney School publications have received at least 21 national awards in the past five years. I consider our external affairs office to be the John Wooden of academic publications,” said Gary R. Roberts, dean of the McKinney School of Law.
The Hermes competition, one of the largest of its kind, is an international creative marketing contest for professionals involved in the conception, writing and design of traditional marketing materials and programs, as well as emerging technologies. Corporate marketing and communications departments, advertising agencies, public relations firms and design shops submit entries.
University College at IUPUI won a platinum award for its National Learning Communities Conference publication and a gold award for its E-Newsletter, University College News Report.
The 2012 National Learning Communities Conference program was the guide for those attending the three-day national conference in Indianapolis last November. Electronically distributed each month, University College News Report is devoted to keeping the IUPUI campus and community informed about University College’s successful programs and people.
University College also earned an honorable mention for the “Inspire, Innovate, and Invigorate” series that informs donors about University College’s programs, leaders, and students as well as giving opportunities.
“Integrated communications is highly complicated and competitive. Done right, the integration of communications can become the strongest component of any enterprise,” said Harriett Bennett, executive director of University College. “Receiving these awards for IUPUI and University College in an international competition is not only an endorsement of our communication efforts but also an affirmation of our commitment to supporting education in all endeavors.”
Hermes contest judges are senior-level, experienced professionals residing in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. They typically spend eight hours a day for about eight weeks reviewing entries at a judging facility in Arlington, Texas. Entries receiving scores between 90-100 points are top-level, platinum winners; entries with 80-89 points are gold winners; and entries scoring from 70 – 79 are honorable mention designation.
Contest categories include advertising, publications, marketing collateral/branding, e-communication, Internet-connect application, video, audio, strategic programs, website element and others.
The IUPUI publications were among 12 Indianapolis publications that received platinum awards. Exact Target and OneAmerica each won four platinum awards, and Defender Direct won one award.
