INDIANAPOLIS -- Students from area schools will get a special lesson in science and medicine from Indiana University medical students June 5-7.

Minority students in Grades 5 to 8 from 30 area schools will attend Doctor Camp from 8:30 to 4 p.m. June 5 at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Medical students conduct hands-on sessions and serve as “camp counselors” as the young students learn how to conduct a physical exam, tour a laboratory, attend pathology and anatomy sessions and take in a science lecture.

This is the 13th annual Doctor Camp, which is sponsored by the IU School of Medicine Office of Medical Service-Learning and co-sponsored by the Metropolitan Indianapolis-Central Indiana Area Health Education Center.

On June 6 and 7, medical students will teach the sixth annual Camp Medical Detectives, which is modeled after Doctor Camp and targets high school students interested in health professions. About two dozen students attend this camp.

Camp Medical Detectives is co-sponsored by the Office of Medical Service-Learning, MICI-AHED and IU School of Medicine Health Professions Programs.

Medical student leaders for Doctor Camp and Camp Medical Detectives are Derryl Miller, a second-year medical student at the IU School of Medicine-Indianapolis; Rishi Megha, a second-year medical student at the IU School of Medicine-Muncie; and Kenneth Moore, a second-year medical student at the IU School of Medicine-Evansville.
