100 girls to explore power and possibilities of technology at IUPUI

The IU School of Informatics at IUPUI will host 100 girls on Saturday, April 27, as they explore the power and possibilities of technology and the impact it has on their lives and the world around them.

Informatics students and staff and a group of local professionals are partnering with Girls Inc.to provide the girls, ages 9 to 17, with a day of science, math, engineering, technology and career exploration.

The girls will learn about possible STEM careers and be coached as they build their own personal website.

They will be shown how the School of Informatics integrates computing, social science and information systems design to explore how people use computing and technology to live, work, play and communicate. Insights gained during that exploration are then applied to develop solutions impacting fields like healthcare, biology, business, law, entertainment and media.

Organizers of the event hope to inspire the girls and peak their interests in STEM related topics. When it comes to sparking the imagination, Informatics has a lot to offer, including a Media Arts Research and Learning Arcade  that gives students access to a professional-level game studio equipped with the latest in gaming technology, a virtual reality theater and an advanced visualization lab.
