Philip W. Shaffer, O.D., has joined the Department of Ophthalmology at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute as an assistant professor of clinical ophthalmology.

Dr. Shaffer will see optometry patients at the Glick Eye Institute, 1160 W. Michigan St., on the IU School of Medicine campus on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

“I look forward to my new affiliation with the Glick Eye Institute and the opportunity to provide vision care for a wide variety of patients,” he said.

Dr. Shaffer is a 2012 graduate of the Indiana University School of Optometry, where he was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society. He received his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from DePauw University and is a 2004 graduate of New Castle High School.

While receiving his education, Dr. Shaffer did clinical rotations in Guanajuato, Mexico, where he worked with patients in a rural setting, and at a Veterans Affairs clinic in Pensacola, Fla., where he worked with veterans who suffered from diabetes, glaucoma and macular degeneration. He also did clinical rotations in Bloomington and Muncie, treating patients with rare and common eye diseases.

He is interested in research into the causes and treatments of dry eye.

Lebanon St., Suite 230, in Lebanon; and at 1001 Hadley Road, Suite 103 location in Mooresville. Faculty physicians also staff the pediatric and adult strabismus clinic at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and see patients at Wishard Health Services and Roudebush Veterans Affairs Medical Center, both in Indianapolis.
