Individuals at risk of developing type 2 diabetes are needed for a clinical study comparing standard lifestyle interventions to the Weight Watchers model for lifestyle modification. The study seeks to determine which program sustains the greatest weight loss for overweight adults with pre-diabetes.

The Indiana University Diabetes Translational Research Center study is open to at-risk people older than 18.

Risk factors include, but are not limited to:

  • Have a family history of diabetes.
  • Are overweight (with a body mass index greater than 24).
  • Had diabetes while pregnant or delivered a baby weighing 9 pounds or more at birth.
  • Have diagnosis of pre-diabetes or elevated blood sugar levels.

Study participants will receive free screenings, including blood sugar and blood cholesterol measurements.

Earlier studies have shown that a weight loss of 7 percent can greatly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Enrollment in the study is anticipated to continue through spring 2013.
